Estádio Luís Troccoli

What sets Estádio Luís Troccoli apart is the neighbourhood it sits in rather than anything grand it does on the pitch. Tucked into La Paloma, on the northern edge of Montevideo where Cerro Norte meets Tres Ombúes, it belongs to Club Atlético Cerro and has never really needed to be more than that — a proper home ground in a part of the city that isn't otherwise on the football map.

The stadium opened on 22 August 1964, and Cerro marked the occasion in style, beating River Plate of Argentina 5-2 in the first match played there. That result has stuck to the place ever since, the kind of opening night a smaller club can point back to for decades.

The full name, Estadio Monumental Luis Tróccoli, honours a former club president, and locals mostly just call it El Tróccoli. There has been no rebrand, no sponsor's name bolted on since 1964 — it has carried Tróccoli's name for over sixty years, which is unusual longevity for a South American ground of this size. The pitch is natural grass, kept to a fairly modest, workmanlike standard befitting a club ground rather than a showpiece.

Cerro have never chased a bigger stadium elsewhere in the capital, and the Tróccoli remains their address of record, a fixed point in a city where several major clubs have shuffled grounds or shared bigger arenas over the years.
