Diego Godín spent a single season at Cerro, 2004-05.

Villa del Cerro gave the club its name and its reason for existing. When Rampla Juniors arrived in the district under the old Uruguayan Football Association, local residents led by Lorenzo Mendilárzu answered by founding a club of their own on 1 December 1922, aligned instead with the breakaway Uruguayan Football Federation.

The one Primera División title never came. The closest Cerro got was 1960, when the team, with Miguel de Brito key to the side, actually won more matches across the season than Peñarol, only to lose the championship playoff. The amateur era brought two Segunda División Amateur titles either side of 1940, and the Copa Montevideo followed in 1985.

Home matches are played at the Estadio Luis Tróccoli, which holds 25,000. The club has reached the Copa Libertadores twice, in 1995 and 2010.
