Montevideo in 1902 was a city where football arrived through the ports and the bars, and one of its clubs was put together in an almacén y bar on calle 19 de Abril — a grocery-and-drink shop, the kind of place where men met because there was nowhere else to meet. The nickname stuck: Bohemios . It has outlasted every other name attached to the club, including the plain translation of Wanderers into Vagabundos , which nobody much uses.

The black-and-white vertical stripes came a year after the founding, adopted following a match against Estudiantes de Buenos Aires in 1903. The shorts have been black ever since.

The first titles came quickly. Wanderers won the Primera División in 1906, again in 1909, and then waited more than two decades for the third, in 1931.
