About the player
Two league titles in Uruguay, won on either side of a decade abroad, sit on Gonzalo Freitas's record — the Segunda División Profesional with Liverpool FC in 2014–15, and the Torneo Clausura with Peñarol in 2018.
Liverpool was where the midfielder from Montevideo did most of his football. He arrived in 2013 after two seasons at Bella Vista and stayed four years, making 98 appearances and scoring eight goals. The promotion season came in the middle of it.
The move to Peñarol in 2018 brought a title in his first months, but only eight appearances with it. He spent much of the next three years elsewhere: a loan to Everton de Viña del Mar in Chile in 2019, where he played 18 times and scored twice, then a longer stay at Deportes Antofagasta across 2020 and 2021, 25 appearances and a goal. An earlier loan had taken him to Atlético Tucumán in Argentina for 13 matches.
Mexico followed. Freitas signed for Mazatlán FC in 2021 and played 20 matches before returning home the next year.
At Defensor Sporting he settled again, 46 appearances and two goals across two seasons, and won the Copa Uruguay in 2022. He left in 2024 for Montevideo Wanderers, the first time he had joined the club.
