Peñarol defeated Wanderers 5-1 in the Torneo Intermedio final of the Primera Apertura on Wednesday evening. The hosts took a commanding lead before the break through four goals in the opening half, and Wanderers could only manage a late consolation through E. Remedi. The result confirms Peñarol's position at the summit of the league.
And here's the thing about this match — it was decided long before the interval. T. N. Espinosa Dovat opened the scoring in the fourteenth minute, followed quickly by L. Cosentino十九 minutes in. M. Arezo added a third twenty-two minutes into the game, and A. Hernandez made it four before the break. C. Jaime completed the first-half flurry just before the whistle, and Wanderers were trailing by five goals at the interval.
By then Wanderers had already dominated possession at sixty percent and registered more attacks, but the statistics tell a different story. The visitors managed only four shots on target compared to Peñarol's seven, and despite having more free kicks and throw-ins, they could not convert their control into goals. Peñarol were clinical when it mattered, while Wanderers carried the ball without real purpose.
The second half brought a series of substitutions from both sides. Wanderers brought on F. Romero thirty-nine minutes in, while Peñarol responded with N. Fernandez and L. Zazpe at the restart. Cosentino and Hernandez were withdrawn for Wanderers and Peñarol respectively in the sixties, and F. Formiliano entered the Wanderers' side seventy-four minutes out. E. Remedi's goal in the eighty-ninth minute was a late gesture rather than a genuine threat.
Peñarol now sit top of the table with fifty points from twenty-six matches, having won fifteen, drawn five and lost six. Wanderers remain seventh with forty-two points from twenty-seven games, their record reading twelve wins, six draws and nine defeats. The result extends Peñarol's recent run of positive results, including victories over Cerro-Largo and Boston River, while Wanderers' loss adds to a mixed run of form.
