Defensor Sporting saw off Cerro 2:1 in the Torneo Intermedio, seventh round of the Primera Apertura on Sunday evening. The hosts held on for all three points after a match that rarely looked settled, and the result leaves both sides level on points at the foot of the table. And here's the thing — two teams with identical records meeting often produces something tighter than the numbers suggest.
Cerro struck first when J. Amaro found the net in the thirtieth minute, a moment that caught the home side off guard. Martin Rabunal responded quickly, equalising just three minutes later with a goal that shifted the momentum. Defensor finally took the lead through L. Navarro in the eightieth fifth minute, and from then on they managed the game rather than chased it.
There were plenty of yellow cards — three for each side — and a steady stream of substitutions that told you neither manager was willing to trust their starting eleven for the full ninety. N. Medina and N. Wunsch both went off, as did A. Severo and A. Miranda for the hosts. Cerro brought on B. Montenegro and J. Neris in search of something, but the game was already slipping away.
By then Defensor were second to nothing in the final exchanges, and the pitch cut up badly enough to slow any comeback attempt. F. Bregante was shown a yellow card in the sixty-fifth minute before being substituted himself, a curious move that suggested the manager wanted freshness rather than punishment. The visitors never got out of second gear despite having the ball for forty-one per cent of the time.
Defensor dominated possession at fifty-nine per cent and registered 113 attacks to Cerro's 104, but the telling figures were in the shooting. Three shots on target for the hosts produced two goals, while Cerro managed only two shots on target and one of them found the net. It was not a game decided by volume so much as efficiency.
Both sides sit on twenty-nine points after twenty-seven games, Defensor in thirteenth place and Cerro in fourteenth. The gap between them is negligible, and this result means neither side can afford to drop points in the weeks ahead. To be fair, the history between them adds an edge that neither side has fully resolved yet.
