Facundo Castro

In early 2018 Facundo Castro came close to a move to the Italian club Brescia. The transfer collapsed: reported changes to the contract conditions, and — according to accounts at the time — the superstition of Brescia president Massimo Cellino, who had seen Castro in a purple shirt. He stayed in Uruguay a few months longer, then left for Mexico instead.

He is a product of the Defensor Sporting academy and made his professional debut there in 2014, staying until 2018 and collecting 101 league appearances and 9 goals. His most productive spell in that first period came in the 2015 Copa Sudamericana, where he scored five times. He tied the tournament's highest goal tally, though official CONMEBOL records list four other players as the joint top scorers.

The transfer to Necaxa in July 2018 was reported at around €1.3 million. It did not last: 33 appearances, 2 goals, and a free move to O'Higgins in July 2019.

Chile is where he settled. Four seasons at O'Higgins brought 130 league appearances, 23 goals and 23 assists — the most sustained run of his career, and the basis for his 2023 nomination for the Gala Crack award as best right winger, which he did not win. A year at Ceará in Brazil followed, with 20 appearances, one goal and the Campeonato Cearense title in 2024. Then Palestino, back in Chile: 15 appearances, one goal.

With Uruguay's under-22 side he won gold at the 2015 Pan American Games, beating Mexico 1-0 in the final. He is a Uruguayan international.

In January 2026 he returned to Defensor Sporting on a free transfer, to the club where he started.
