Lucas Machado

Lucas Machado has spent his career as a goalkeeper on the move between Uruguayan clubs, and every one of those moves has come without a fee attached.

He came up through River Plate in Montevideo, where he turned professional and stayed from 2019 to 2021. Fourteen league appearances over three seasons tell their own story: he was in the squad far more often than he was in the side. He left in January 2022 on a free transfer.

Rentistas gave him the shirt he had been waiting for. In the 2022 Primera División season he was the starting goalkeeper, the first choice rather than the alternative, and it was the first sustained run of top-flight football in his career. It lasted one season. The club went down to the Segunda División and played there through 2023 and 2024, with Machado still between the posts. Three years at the club, one of them in the top division.

He left Rentistas in January 2025, again for nothing, and signed for Defensor Sporting.

What the record does not contain is worth stating plainly. Between 2019 and 2025 Machado won no domestic title — neither River Plate nor Rentistas took a championship while he was on their books, and Defensor Sporting had not won the top-flight title across that period either. No individual awards are recorded against his name, and no senior caps for Uruguay: the major databases list him among neither the call-ups nor the debutants.
