About the player
In 2018 Kevin Dawson became the first goalkeeper named Uruguayan Player of the Year. It came in the middle of a run in which he was also voted the best goalkeeper in the Uruguayan Primera División three years running, in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
The first two of those awards came at Plaza Colonia, where he made his senior debut in 2012 and passed 120 appearances before leaving in 2017. Peñarol took him on loan that year and he went straight in as first choice, winning the Primera División title in his first season. The move was made permanent in 2018 for €0.4 million. He won the league again in 2018 and 2021, and added the Supercopa Uruguaya in 2018.
The move abroad did not hold. Dawson joined the Colombian club Deportivo Cali on a free transfer in 2023 and left after roughly 19 appearances, citing unpaid wages and threats from supporters. He found a way back into it quickly enough: a return to Plaza Colonia for the second half of 2023, this time as captain, then a free transfer to Defensor Sporting in January 2024.
At Defensor he has won the Copa AUF Uruguay twice. The 2023 edition was settled on penalties against Montevideo City Torque in May 2024; the 2024 title followed.
