Nicolás Andrés Wunsch Tomás

The 83rd minute of the 2023 Copa Uruguay final gave Nicolás Wunsch the goal he still names as the finest of his career. Defensor Sporting were trailing Montevideo City Torque when he levelled the tie at 2-2, and the match went to a shootout that Defensor won 4-2. It was the second Copa Uruguay of his young career: the club had also taken the 2022 edition.

Wunsch came through Defensor Sporting's youth academy and has spent almost all of his senior football there. His first appearance for the senior side came on 24 November 2021, in a Segunda División fixture against Danubio. The club's rise since then has run alongside his own: in 2024 Defensor Sporting won the Torneo Apertura of the Campeonato Uruguayo, adding a domestic league title to the two cups.

The one break in the pattern came in the second half of 2024, when he joined CA Cerro on loan from August to December. No fee was recorded for the move, as none has been for any of his transfers.

He is a midfielder and his record so far is one of team honours rather than personal ones — no top-scorer prize, no player-of-the-year award. Montevideo, where he was born, has remained the whole geography of his career: the academy, the first team, the loan across the city.
