Germán Ramón Barrios Núñez

Five assists in 24 league appearances is the line that defines Germán Barrios's 2025 season with Defensor Sporting , the club whose academy raised him. He added a goal of his own that year and has been a regular starter since.

Barrios grew up in Montevideo and came through the Defensor Sporting youth system, signing his first professional contract with the club in 2023. His senior route ran through a loan: on 8 February 2024 he joined River Plate (Montevideo) for the season, and on 2 March he made his debut against Danubio — the match recorded as his first official senior appearance.

The number 5 shirt has stayed on his back through a heavier schedule since. Alongside the league campaign he played twice in the Copa Uruguay in 2025, and in 2026 has added 21 league appearances with three assists, one outing in the Copa de la Liga AUF and one in the Copa Sudamericana. He was part of the Defensor Sporting squad that reached the final of the 2024 Super Copa Uruguaya and finished runners-up.

Uruguay noticed him early. He was called into an Under-15 training camp in September 2019, and two years later was named in the Under-17 squad for the 2021 CONMEBOL South American Under-17 Championship. No individual awards have been recorded against his name.

His contract with Defensor Sporting runs to 2028. Neither his permanent status at the club nor the move to River Plate involved a transfer fee.
