Sixteen goals and five assists in 34 matches on loan at Montevideo City Torque in 2025 remain the clearest run of form on José Neris's record.

Neris came through the youth ranks at River Plate (Montevideo) and made his senior debut there in August 2017. He stayed until January 2023, with a further seven matches and one goal in the Copa Sudamericana.

The move to Argentina in January 2023 did not work. Colón paid a reported $800,000 for 65 per cent of his economic rights, River Plate keeping the rest, and Neris made 14 first-team appearances without scoring. He was loaned to Peñarol that August and scored twice in 17 matches through the 2024 season.

His exit from Colón in early 2026 went to the courts. Neris declared himself a free agent, citing unpaid January wages and his exclusion from training and matchday squads; Colón said he had abandoned the club without cause and sued both the player and Emelec for $1.266 million. He landed in Guayaquil on 22 February 2026 and was presented two days later on a three-year deal. He debuted in March and did not score in his first half-season, leaving on loan to Defensor Sporting in July 2026 until December, citing personal and family reasons.

He has 26 caps for Uruguay at under-15 level, 19 at under-17 and nine at under-20, with 18 goals across the three. In May 2024 he was named in the squad for the first Uruguay A' side. He has not been capped by the senior team.
