Líber Arispe was on the bench in 1984 when Central Español won the only Primera División title in its history.

The team the coach inherited traced back to a merger in the Palermo district of Montevideo, where Solís Bochas and Soriano Polideportivo combined on 5 January 1905 under the name Central FC. Red, white and blue came from Los Esclavos del Nyanza, one of the carnival troupes that paraded through the same streets. The word "Español" was not added until 1971, following an agreement with a Spanish community group, and it is the name that has carried the club since.

Before any of that, in 1923, Central FC stood alongside Peñarol in founding the Federación Uruguaya de Fútbol.

Longer stretches have been spent working back up from the second tier, most recently in 2024, when a second-place finish in the Segunda División returned the club to the Primera.
