About

The Segunda División Profesional de Uruguay operates as the second tier of the national football hierarchy. Organized by the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol, the competition replaced the amateur Divisional Intermedia when it was established in 1942. This date marks the start of the professional era for this level. The season structure differs from many other leagues through its division into two distinct stages. The opening phase, known as the Torneo Competencia, splits the fourteen participating clubs into two groups of seven for a round-robin format. Following this, the Torneo Campeonato sees all teams play each other in a single round-robin sequence. Promotion to the top flight offers three pathways. The leading two sides on the aggregate annual table secure direct promotion. The final place is contested via a playoff between the winner of the opening stage and teams finishing third to sixth in the main table. Relegation is more straightforward, with the bottom two teams dropping directly to the Primera División Amateur, also referred to as Primera Divisional C. This third tier serves as the feeder system for the Segunda División. Unlike the first division, this league does not provide direct access to continental tournaments such as the Copa Libertadores or Copa Sudamericana. However, the highest-ranked teams enter the Copa AUF Uruguay. The winner of this tournament earns a spot in the Copa Libertadores. Historical success belongs primarily to Fénix and Sud América, who have each claimed seven titles. The reigning champions are Albion, who secured their second title after the 2025 season concluded. Notable structural changes occurred in 1994, introducing a model that evolved into the current system. The league’s current participants include Atenas, Cerrito, Colón, Fénix, La Luz, and Miramar Misiones.
