Football took root in Brazo Oriental as a neighbourhood pursuit before it had a name, and on 12 March 1907 the men who played it in that stretch of Montevideo gave it one: Colón. The green in the first strip stood on its own until a replay for the right to wear it went the other way, and the club added white to settle into the tricolour it wears now — green, white and red, the shirt behind the nickname El Verde.
Colón built its record in the lower reaches of Uruguayan football. A Divisprofessional title never arrived; what did was a run of promotions, each one earned in a division below the top flight. The club topped the División Extra in 1920, took the third-tier Divisional Intermedia four times across 1925, 1927, 1931 and 1954, and won the amateur league in 1933. Professional football brought two Segunda División titles, in 1964 and 1982, each one a step up. More recent seasons repeated the pattern: champions of the amateur third tier in 1988 and 2000, and again in 2023, when the Primera División Amateur title sent Colón back up to Segunda.
None of that history carries a rival's name attached to it — the closest Colón comes to a fixture with weight behind it are the promotion deciders it has played against sides like Albion, Uruguay Montevideo and Bella Vista, matches that mattered for a single season rather than for a rivalry that outlasted it. The women's team has done what the men's side has not: four straight national championships between 2013 and 2016.
Home games are played at the Estadio Parque Doctor Carlos Suero, a ground that holds 2,000. It suits a club that has never fielded a name recognised outside Uruguay — no academy graduate has gone on to make Colón's shirt famous abroad, and the closest the roster has come to international notice is a contract handed to Indian footballer Bijoy Chhetri in 2024, decades after Colón's most talked-about signing wasn't a footballer at all but a basketball player, Ariel Olascoaga, in the 1950s.
