Oriental was formed on 24 June 1924 in La Paz, in the department of Canelones, and its first years ran through the local rather than the national game: the club helped found the Liga Regional del Sur and, in 1925 and 1929, took the Canelones departmental championship. It did not join the Uruguayan Football Association until 1975, entering at the bottom in Primera División "D".

Promotion followed in stages. Oriental won the third-tier Primera División "C" in 1979 and spent 1980 to 1987 in what is now the Segunda División Profesional, finishing fourth in 1980 as its best placing there. The club then won the amateur third division three times over — in 2004, 2007 and 2008–09 — without going up on any of those occasions, unable to meet the financial requirements of professional status. The Apertura and Liguilla double in 2014–15 finally settled the matter, sending Oriental back into the Segunda División Profesional, where it stayed through 2015–16 and 2017–18 before dropping down again. A company, Oriental FC SAD, was set up in 2021 to run the professional side of the club, and in 2022 Oriental returned to the second tier as runners-up. The top flight has never featured on its record.

Home games are played at Parque Oriental, which holds 1,500, 500 of them seated. The Paceños, as the club and its followers are known locally, play in sky blue, white and black.
