La Luz

La Luz have no fixed grudge match, no derby the fixture list circles in red. What they have instead is a stranger standoff, with geography itself: the club is based in Montevideo, in the Aires Puros neighbourhood, yet its home matches are played more than 300km away, at the Estadio Municipal Parque Liebig's in Fray Bentos. Whatever ground they once had is gone, and until it returns, or is replaced, every "home" fixture is an away trip for the players who actually live where the club is from.

The name goes back further than any of that, to 19 April 1929, when a group of friends including Luis Rivero, Luis Enrico and José Rueco founded the club in a neighbourhood bar. The bar had electricity, one of the few buildings around that did, and the founders called their new club La Luz — the light — after it.

For most of a century that followed, La Luz lived in Uruguay's lower divisions. They took the amateur third tier, the Divisional Extra, in 1933, and went on to win the Segunda División Amateur five times, in 1962, 1976, 1992, 2001 and 2003, the 1962 title carrying them into the professional Segunda for the first time before relegation pulled them back down in 1971. They were never able to go a step further and win Primera B outright, finishing runners-up instead in 1965, 1967, 1978 and again in 2022.

That 2022 second-place finish did what decades of amateur titles never managed: it put La Luz, known to their own as Los merengues, into the Primera División for the first time in the club's history. The stay lasted one season. La Luz went down again in 2023 and returned to the second tier, back to white and green, and back to Fray Bentos, wherever "home" happens to be that weekend.
