In November 2025 Juan Ramón Silvera watched his side go through an entire amateur season without losing a match. By the time he was gone, Sanduceros had swept the Apertura, the Clausura and the Tabla Anual of the Primera División Amateur, unbeaten, and earned the club's promotion to the Segunda División for 2026. Emiliano Alfaro was brought in afterward to take the team into its new league.

Paysandú Fútbol Club did not grow out of a single team. It was assembled on 7 March 2003 by merging eight clubs from the city of Paysandú — Barrio Obrero, Centenario, Deportivo América, Estudiantil, Independiente, Juventud Unida, Olímpico and Paysandú Wanderers — into one new entity with no direct predecessor among them. That first version reached Uruguay's top flight in 2005, finished fourteenth, went down, and by 2006 had folded altogether under financial strain and a falling-out with the founding clubs.

The club returned in 2021 as a Sociedad Anónima Deportiva, backed by new investment led by former Uruguay international Nicolás Lopez, who took a 70% stake. Sebastián Abreu, the forward whose career had taken him across continents, was named coach in 2022. The rebuilt Paysandú started again from the third tier, which is where it stayed until Silvera's unbeaten campaign carried it up.

The Sanduceros play in white and blue at the Estadio Parque Artigas, which holds 25,000.
