Diego Abella

The step from Cerro Largo to Montevideo came in 2023, when Diego Abella left the youth ranks of his home club for the academy of Defensor Sporting. He joined the under-19 side, and the contract that formalised the move took effect on 1 January 2024.

The promotion to the first team followed. Abella's senior minutes have come in small instalments — among them a substitute appearance against Racing Club de Montevideo in May 2026, when he was brought on rather than started. A left-footed defender, he has spent the period since the step up working within the squad rather than in it week to week.

In August 2026 his name appeared on a list beyond the club: a call-up to the Uruguay under-20 training camp, run by coach Diego Forlán. It was a camp and not a match squad — at that point Abella had no caps recorded at that level. The invitation says what selection lists say and no more: the staff wanted a look at him.

There are no individual awards or titles on his record. What exists is a straightforward line — a club academy in the interior, a move to a Montevideo side, a contract, a first-team place, a national training camp — compressed into a short span of years. The next entries have yet to be written.
