Penarol saw off Cerro-Largo 3-0 in the seventh round of the Torneo Intermedio, part of the Primera Apertura. The hosts moved further clear at the top of the table while the visitors slipped deeper into trouble. It was a day where Penarol's efficiency outweighed Cerro-Largo's attempts to find rhythm.
And here's the thing — the opening goal came at the 34th minute when A. Hernandez made his move. The away side had a yellow card for Lucas Hernandez shortly after, at 39 minutes, and things began to tighten. By then Penarol were already looking comfortable, and the game's shape became clearer.
The second goal arrived at 54 minutes, again through Hernandez. Then M. Arezo added a third at 58 minutes, and the visitors were left exposed. Penarol made changes at 61, 64 and 71 minutes, bringing on N. Herrera, G. Viera and C. Jaime. Cerro-Largo responded with S. Marcel and S. Assis at 81 and 84 minutes, but the result was already decided.
The statistics tell a story of wasted energy. Cerro-Largo registered 132 attacks against Penarol's 107, and had seven corners to five. Yet Penarol had nine shots on target with just three off target, while the visitors managed only four on target and five wide. Possession sat at 50-50, but the numbers don't capture who controlled the tempo.
Penarol sit top after 26 games with 50 points, 15 wins and five draws. Cerro-Largo occupy 10th place with 32 points from 27 matches, eight victories and eight draws. The gap between them is now 18 points, and the visitors are running out of games to recover ground.
