The 1988 championship was Danubio's first, and it arrived paired with the Torneo Competencia that same year. Three more league titles followed — 2004, when the club beat Nacional in the final, then 2006/07, then 2013/14. Diego Perrone's goal had already settled the 2004 final. Between those championships came a string of shorter titles: three Aperturas, three Clausuras, a Clasificatorio, a Copa de Honor Celeste Olímpica.

It started as Tigre, a team of schoolboys from the Escuela República Nicaragua in Curva de Maroñas, and only became Danubio after a fundraising lottery in 1933, taking its name from a founder's mother, a Bulgarian who suggested the river Danube. The diagonal stripe that gave the club its nickname, La Franja, was fixed a decade later, in 1942. Founded on 1 March 1932, the club won the second division unbeaten in its first campaign there, in 1944, and reached the top flight in 1947.

Danubio has built its reputation as much on what it produces as on what it wins. Its academy has sent out Edinson Cavani, who broke in at 15, Álvaro Recoba, who debuted at 16 before moving on to become an Inter Milan legend, and Rubén Sosa, on the books at 15 and a World Cup winner with Uruguay in 1986. Diego Forlán passed through the youth ranks in the early 1990s.

Matches against Defensor Sporting, the Clásico de los Medianos, are a significant fixture. The club plays at Jardines del Hipódromo, and after dropping to the second division in 2020 for the first time in 51 years, it returned at the first attempt in 2021, finishing as runner-up.
