Venezuela had never staged the Copa América until 2007. Fernando de la Carrera, Alejandro Cavanzo and Diego Sorio drew it up; the build came in at around US$85 million. Maturín then got two of the tournament's heavier afternoons: Brazil beat Chile 3–0 in the group stage in front of 51,300, and returned for the quarter-final that finished Brazil 6–0 Paraguay.

The scale it was given for those weeks has never been reduced. Of the 51,796 places, 48,669 are grandstand seats, the remaining 3,127 set aside for press, suites and disabled access — the same numbers it has carried since 2007, which is why the nicknames El Coloso de Maturín and La Joya de Oriente stuck to it. That full figure was finally reached on 10 September 2024, when Venezuela played Uruguay in 2026 World Cup qualifying and the ground did not have a seat left.

Between the international dates the stadium does more ordinary work. Monagas SC play their home matches on its natural grass, and the Venezuelan federation has used it as neutral ground for finals in Liga FUTVE 2, Liga FUTVE B and Liga FUTVE Femenina. It also hosted the 2009 South American U-20 Championship, and in the years after the Copa América it was rented out for concerts — Daddy Yankee and Héctor el Father in 2008, Silvestre Dangond in 2013.
