The running track went in 2023. The renovation pushed the official capacity to 85,018 — more than the ground held after the 1978 World Cup work, when it seated somewhere in the low seventy thousands.

The name has moved twice. From 1938 it was simply Estadio Monumental. In 1986 the club attached the name of Antonio Vespucio Liberti, the president who set the construction going, and that is the name the ground carried until 2022, when sponsorship added Más Monumental to the front of it.

José Aslan and Héctor Escurra drew the original design; the inauguration came on 25 May 1938, the first match a day later. What has changed underneath is less visible. A SIS Grass hybrid surface was laid in January 2021, with aeration and heating beneath it.

The 1978 World Cup final was decided here, Argentina beating the Netherlands 3–1, and the 2011 Copa América final too — Uruguay 3–0 against Paraguay. Copa Libertadores finals keep returning, most recently Botafogo against Atlético Mineiro in 2024. The 2030 World Cup is scheduled to bring matches back.
