The Estadio Helmántico sits not in Salamanca itself but on its edge, in Villares de la Reina, and that distance from the centre has shaped how the ground is talked about locally as much as anything on its scoreboard. What sets it apart from a purpose-built modern bowl is the layering of decisions made over half a century: it opened in April 1970 with room to stand as well as sit, closer to 30,000 than the number now listed, and that first version of the ground barely resembles what's there today.

Roof damage in 1979 forced a reduction in capacity, an early sign that the structure would keep being adjusted rather than replaced. The bigger change came in 1995, timed to UD Salamanca's return to La Liga, when the club fitted seating throughout and settled the capacity at 17,341, all of it seated. By the end of that decade two further pitches had gone in alongside the main one, one of them laid with artificial turf, turning the site into more of a training complex than a single stadium.

The pitch itself has stayed with natural grass throughout. Ownership of the tenancy has moved on too: Salamanca Club de Fútbol U.D.S. have held the ground since 2016, a club identity distinct from the sides that filled it in its higher-capacity years. Attendance in the modern era rarely approaches the old ceiling, though a league fixture against Sant Andreu in June 2023 drew 15,400, a figure well above what a ground at this level in Spain typically sees.
