Estádio Municipal Governador Antônio Mariz (Marizão)

The stadium in Sousa carries the name of a former mayor, Antônio Marques da Silva Mariz, but everyone in town just calls it the Marizão. It belongs to the municipality and is run by Sousa Esporte Clube, whose ground it has been through decades of Sertão football that rarely draws attention from the coastal cities of Paraíba.

Its early history is not entirely settled. Club records point to an opening in the mid-1980s, while a local account describes the ground as effectively rebuilt between 1994 and 1996, calling that the true inauguration of "O Marizão." Both versions survive in circulation, and no single date has fully displaced the other.

The listed capacity of 14,000 has not matched what the ground was actually allowed to hold in recent years. In 2024, the fire service capped attendance at 6,358 on safety grounds, a limit well below the official figure. Ahead of the 2025 Campeonato Paraibano, the stadium went through a round of targeted repairs rather than a full rebuild: the substitutes' bench was levelled and given an acrylic roof, a new septic system went in, an electronic scoreboard was installed, and the dressing rooms and stands were refreshed with air conditioning, tiling and paint.

The Marizão's name travelled furthest in 2024, when Sousa beat Cruzeiro 2-0 here in the Copa do Brasil — the first time a club from the Sertão region had beaten one of Brazilian football's traditional giants in the competition's history. The pitch remains natural grass, in keeping with a ground built for local seasons rather than continental fixtures.
