The pitch began life in 1922 as Campo de La Barraca, home to Círculo Popular de La Felguera, and it took its present name only in 1961, when the club renamed the ground for Francisco Fernández Ganzábal, the president credited with pushing the original works through.

The new ground opened on 3 September 2006, and Unión Popular de Langreo marked the occasion the only way that mattered, beating CD San Martín 2-1 in the first match played on the rebuilt pitch. The bigger night came a few weeks later, on 20 September, when Spain's under-19s met Turkey's under-19s at Nuevo Ganzábal in a friendly.

Since the rebuild the stadium has played on artificial turf, and it remains Unión Popular de Langreo's home.
