Salta got its big ground because a tournament was coming. The Estadio Padre Ernesto Martearena , on Avenida Juan Pablo II, was built for the 2001 FIFA world youth championship, and the calendar shows in the way it arrived: officially opened on 5 January 2001, with the first friendly played there on 16 March.
That origin explains what the place is now. for a fixture list that lasted a few weeks. Since then it has been shared. Central Norte and Juventud Antoniana , rivals in the city, both play there, and Argentina's rugby side has used it too.
Juventud Antoniana, though, have somewhere older. The Estadio Fray Honorato Pistoia opened in July 1930 at Lerma 649, holds perhaps eight to ten thousand, and is named for Fray Benito Honorato Pistoia, a Salta priest and historian who followed the club.
