The ground stands on the site of Københavns Idrætspark, which opened in 1911 and came down in 1990. When Baltica Finans A/S built the replacement to Gert Andersson's design, the main stand of the old ground was kept and folded into the new structure.

It has been rebuilt twice since. In 2000–2001 a retractable roof went on, put there for concerts and for the Eurovision Song Contest of 2001; in 2009 hospitality boxes were added in the North Stand. The football record is 42,099, set when Denmark played Greece in a qualifier for the 2005 World Cup.

Ownership followed the same drift from investors to the club. Baltica Finans sold in 1998 to Parken Sport & Entertainment, the company owned by F.C. Copenhagen, and the club has run the ground since. It shares it with the Denmark national side.

Two European finals have been played here, eleven years apart, with the same English club in both: Arsenal against Parma in the 1994 Cup Winners' Cup final, then Galatasaray against Arsenal in the 2000 UEFA Cup final. The pitch they are played on now is hybrid grass.
