Gamla Ullevi

The name is a leftover from a building that no longer exists. When Gothenburg pulled down the 1916 stadium that had stood by Ullevigatan for nine decades, the replacement went up on the same footprint and kept calling itself Old Ullevi — even as the concrete was still new. It opened on 5 April 2009 with a derby between Örgryte IS and GAIS, and a week later, on 12 April, IFK Göteborg's match against Djurgårdens IF drew 18,276 supporters, still the ground's attendance record.

The opening months exposed a problem nobody had priced for: the stands shook when home fans jumped in unison, badly enough that the operator had to spend around 20 million kronor reinforcing the structure. It was one more line on a budget that had already swollen from an initial 180 million kronor to somewhere near 335–350 million by completion.

In 2021, the ground hosted the UEFA Women's Champions League final between Chelsea and Barcelona, played out in front of empty seats because of pandemic restrictions — a final with no crowd noise to test those reinforced stands. Day to day, Gamla Ullevi is shared ground: GAIS, IFK Göteborg and Örgryte IS all call it home, BK Häcken used it briefly in 2014–15, and Sweden's women's national team has played there since it opened.
