Foxborough's arena is running out one identity before its next one is even fixed. Gillette Stadium carries the New England Patriots and the Revolution through the World Cup years, but the venue's own website already flags it as a stand-in — the club's real future ground, White Stadium, is still on paper, and until it rises, Foxborough keeps hosting on borrowed time in a name that itself keeps changing.

The stadium opened in 2002 as part of the Patriot Place complex, a stretch of shops, restaurants and entertainment venues built around it rather than the other way round. FIFA's ban on sponsor names means that for the 2026 World Cup group matches, Gillette Stadium plays under the temporary label Boston Stadium — a reminder that the razor company's name on the building has always been a lease, not a birthright, and one due to run until 2031 under the current deal.

The playing surface tells its own story of trial and correction: natural grass gave way to FieldTurf in 2006, and the pitch was refreshed again in 2024 to meet FIFA's Quality Pro standard ahead of the tournament. Capacity has drifted downward too, from the high 68,000s at opening to just over 64,000 now, after a rebuild of the north stand.

None of that changes what the ground is built for on a Sunday afternoon — Patriots football first, soccer second, with the World Cup group stage set to pass through under its interim name before Gillette reclaims it.
