Glückauf-Kampfbahn

Glückauf-Kampfbahn takes its first half from the miners' greeting used across the coalfields of the Ruhr, and the ground has kept it since the day it opened in 1928 with a 3-3 draw against SV Köln-Sülz.

What sets it apart from the newer grounds around Gelsenkirchen is what it has been asked to hold. It took in 70,000 on 1 June 1931 for a friendly against Fortuna Düsseldorf, a 1-0 win. Nine years later, around 43,000 watched Schalke beat Wolverhampton 4-0 in the European Cup.

Then came the shrinking. In 1989 every terrace was demolished except the listed main stand, and earth banks were pushed up in their place; capacity fell to about 11,000.

It is still in use. DJK Teutonia Schalke-Nord play amateur and women's fixtures here, and between 2023 and 2025 the surrounding Sportgarten was rebuilt at a cost of more than €4m, including repairs to the monument on the old main stand.
