Independence 20th Anniversary Stadium
The name arrived before the anniversary it marks. Худжанд got its ground in 2009, two years ahead of the twentieth anniversary of Tajik independence, so for a while the stadium in Sogd region was commemorating something that had not yet happened.
Size is the other thing that sets it apart. At 25,000 seats it is the largest arena in Tajikistan — and it sits not in the capital but in the north, in the country's second city. That inversion is unusual: ФК «Худжанд», who play their home matches on it.
There is no Soviet layer under the name, and that matters more than it sounds. The Душанбе ground carried Фрунзе's name for decades; the Худжанд arena never had a predecessor title to shed, because it was built after independence and named for it from the start. Whatever history accumulates here has been accumulating only since 2009.
The pitch is natural grass. The street address is not on record — what is fixed is the position, 40°17'31" north, 69°36'51" east, which places it on the northern side of the country.
For visiting sides it means a long trip to the biggest crowd in the country.
