Johan Cruyff Arena
The stadium carried nothing but Ajax's home form for two decades. Then, on 25 April 2017, club and city agreed to attach a name to it: from the 2018/19 season, Amsterdam ArenA became Johan Cruijff ArenA, after the player who shaped the club's football and, later, its academy. No sponsor has bought the naming rights since — the tribute stands unshared.
Before that, the ground carried a placeholder name: Stadion Amsterdam through design and construction between 1993 and 1995, then simply Amsterdam ArenA once it opened on 14 August 1996. Ballast Nedam and Royal BAM Group built it to a design led by architect Rob Schuurman with Sjoerd Soeters and Benthem Crouwel Architects, at a cost equivalent to roughly 140 million euros.
The roof brought its own problem. Natural grass struggled for light underneath it, and the pitch was relaid as often as 45 times through the stadium's first decade. The club replaced pure turf with Tarkett Sports' PlayMaster hybrid system in 2016/17, ninety per cent natural grass reinforced with synthetic fibre, then moved to the same manufacturer's GrassMaster surface in 2022.
The arena sits in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, at ArenA Boulevard 1, and now holds 55,865.
