Karonga Stadium
Karonga, Malawi
Set at the Baka Research Station under the Traditional Authority of Kyungu, the ground sits apart from the usual clustering of towns in Malawi. The Local Development Fund of the Government of Malawi footed the bill, with the German Development Corporation stepping in to fill the coffers, and Nangaunozge Building Contractors saw the job through to completion. Work began in 2014 and finished by 2017, with the doors opening properly in January 2018 when Kondowani Namkumwa, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, cut the ribbon.
Karonga Stadium holds 20,000 spectators. Karonga United FC, also known as Karonga FC, call it home, though they are not the only tenants; Moyale Barracks FC and Mighty Wanderers FC have also played here. The Malawi National Football Team used the venue until 2017.
The ground is not without its scars. In March 2018, a fire broke out in the VIP stand during a clash between Karonga United and Rumphi Pirates. An electrical fault was suspected, and while the stand was gutted, the flames were brought under control within 35 minutes. Renovation work followed, stretching out over the years until 2024, though the cost of putting the roof back together is not recorded. The ticket office saw its highest haul in August 2018, pulling in K8,743,660 from a match against Nyasa Big Bullets, but the number of heads in the stands for that game has gone missing.
There is no separate site for the stadium itself; visitors must go to the Karonga District Council page to find information. It has never been renamed, and through the years it has remained exactly what it was built to be: a place for football in the far north.
