On 29 June 2019 a side from Malawi's Northern Region walked out for the final of the Airtel Top 8 Cup. Karonga United had come through the semi-final against Mzuni FC on penalties, 5-4. In the final Khuda Muyaba scored for Silver Strikers, and that single goal was the difference.

The cup has kept pulling them back. In 2022 they reached the quarter-finals and were taken apart by Nyasa Big Bullets, 8-1 over the two legs.

Founded in 2008, the club plays in the TNM Super League.

Karonga Stadium holds 20,000, and in September 2024 the club was locked out of it — the Football Association of Malawi barred its use after crowd trouble, sending home matches up the road to Rumphi Stadium.
