The pitch at Копавогсвётлюр has been relaid twice in four years. Natural grass lasted from the opening until 2019, when the municipality — which owns and runs the ground — put down an artificial surface; that one was replaced again in 2023 to meet UEFA's technical requirements.

It opened on 7 June 1975 with a second-division match between Брейдаблик and Викингур Оулафсвик. ХК Копавогюр, founded in 1970, share the ground with their football side in the 1. deild karla.

The listed capacity is 3,009, but European nights have not tested it. Against Аустрия Вена in 2021 and Копенгаген in 2023, the crowds ranged between 1,500 and 1,697.

The ground also serves as an alternative home for Iceland's national sides. On 5 апреля 2024 the women's team beat Poland 3-0 here in qualifying for the 2025 European Championship, and youth internationals at U16, U17 and U19 level pass through regularly. Icelandic Cup semi-finals and, on occasion, finals are played on the same surface.

The name has not changed since 1975; sponsors' names on grounds have gained little ground in Iceland.
