The current Rosaleda dates to 1941, when Málaga's club left the flooded Baños del Carmen ground and settled on the site designed by Enrique Atencia Molina and Fernando Guerrero-Strachan Rosado. What sets the ground apart is how far its capacity has swung across the decades. For the 1982 World Cup, after a major rebuild, it held crowds well above what today's card shows — 45,000 packed in for the Soviet Union against Scotland, and 36,000 saw Scotland put five past New Zealand. A second, deeper reconstruction ran from 2000 to 2006, bringing the ground down to its current all-seated form.

Beyond football, La Rosaleda has doubled as one of the city's biggest concert venues. George Michael drew 62,000 there in July 1989, and Shakira, RBD, Alejandro Sanz and Maná have all filled it since. Copa de la Reina brought its final here in 2020, and Peace Cup football passed through in 2009, including a semi-final between Porto and Aston Villa. In league terms, the modern attendance record stands at 28,000, set on 4 November 2012 against Rayo Vallecano — a match Málaga lost 1-2. More recently, 27,281 turned out for a Segunda fixture against Deportivo in January 2025, and a 2017 visit from Real Madrid drew 27,855.

None of this history will last much longer in its current shape: plans approved in 2025 call for a new stadium on the site, with an opening targeted for 2032.
