The crowd figure that keeps recurring in the old records is 60,000 — twice in 1961, once in 1966, once again in 1968 — at a ground that now seats 35,000.

It went up between 1954 and 1956 to a design by the architect Mithat Sagatdinovich Bulatov, under the USSR's construction ministry, and opened on 11 August 1956. Before that, Pakhtakor had played at the old Spartak ground. The name has not changed since.

What happened here was not always football. On 4 April 1969, after Pakhtakor lost the season's opening match to Dinamo Minsk, nationalist rioting broke out in Tashkent. In 1983 the pitch was given over to a concert marking the city's 2,000th anniversary.

The date of the opening also happens to be the date of the crash. On 11 August 1979 the Pakhtakor-79 side died in a mid-air collision, and the ground holds an annual memorial match; the 2019 veterans' fixture finished 4–4.

Later work in 1960, 1980, 1996 and 2012 left the seating figure where the 2009 rebuild had set it. Uzbekistan's national team used the ground as its main home from 1992 until 2012; on natural grass, in the Shaykhantakhur district on Islam Karimov Street.
