In 1968, after fire tore through the neighbouring City Ground, Nottingham Forest moved in for six matches, drawing three and losing three on borrowed turf a few hundred yards from home. The ground took its own hit long before that: a Second World War bombing raid in 1942 damaged the site and forced that season to be abandoned altogether.

On 12 March 1955, 47,310 people packed in for a sixth-round FA Cup tie against York City, only to watch the visitors leave with a 1-0 win.

The Taylor Report, written in the aftermath of Hillsborough, forced Notts County to tear down the old Meadow Lane End, County Road Stand and Spion Kop between 1992 and 1994 and replace them with all-seated structures, the Main Stand following in 1994 as the Derek Pavis Stand.
