Nottingham has room for two league clubs, and Notts County got there first, by four decades. The club traces itself to 1862, with a formal meeting recorded on 7 December 1864, and calls itself, on that basis, the oldest professional football club in the world.
The trophy count doesn't match the age. One major honour sits in the cabinet: the FA Cup, won in 1894 and never repeated. The rest of the honours board is lower-division work — the Second Division title three times, from 1897 to 1923, and League Two in 2010, the most recent addition.
The black-and-white kit earned the club its nickname in 1890: the Magpies, for the same colouring as the bird. Nottingham Forest, across the Trent, is the old rival, and the fixture between them is known simply as the Nottingham Derby.
Steve Finnan played at Meadow Lane between 1996 and 1998 before his move to Liverpool and a Champions League final; Jack Grealish spent the 2013/14 season there on loan. Meadow Lane itself holds 19,841.
