Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Mercedes-Benz Stadium was built to open and close, and that engineering choice shapes everything about a matchday here. The retractable roof lets organisers decide on the day whether Atlanta United play under open sky or sealed indoors.

The venue sits somewhere between neighbourhoods that don't quite agree on its address — accounts place it variously in Castleberry Hill, Vine City, West Midtown or simply Downtown Atlanta. It opened on 26 August 2017.

Atlanta United draw a capacity of 42,500 for MLS nights, while the building expands to around 71,000, and further still with additional seating, for Falcons games — the same shell reconfiguring itself for a different sport rather than compromising for both.

The pitch itself has been rebuilt more than once. Artificial turf from GreenFields went down at opening in 2017, was replaced in 2019, and gave way again in 2024 to FieldTurf CORE — the surface Atlanta United use now, with real grass laid temporarily over it for matches that call for it.

The name has held steady since construction, fixed under a 27-year agreement signed in August 2015, though it will step aside temporarily for the 2026 World Cup, when the stadium reverts to the plainer Atlanta Stadium for the tournament.
