Molineux Stadium

The record crowd tells you what the place used to look like: 61,315 came for a First Division draw with Liverpool on 11 February 1939, back when the whole ground was terracing and capacity ran past 60,000. The Taylor Report ended that. Between 1990 and 1993, Wolverhampton Wanderers tore down the old stands and rebuilt three of them — Stan Cullis, Billy Wright and Jack Harris — at a cost of around £15 million, which brought capacity down to 28,525. The club filled the gap with temporary seating twice, in 2003–2006 and again in 2009–2011, whenever promotion to the Premier League pushed demand ahead of what the rebuilt ground could hold. The Stan Cullis Stand went up a second time in 2011–2012, this time from single tier to double, in an £18 million job that settled the ground at its current 31,750.

Molineux hosted the first leg of the first UEFA Cup final ever played, on 3 May 1972, when Wolves lost the tie 3-2 on aggregate to Tottenham Hotspur after the return leg in London. England have played here three times across more than a century — beating Ireland 6-1 in 1891, Denmark 5-2 in a 1958 World Cup qualifier in 1956, and returning in 2022 for a Nations League defeat to Hungary and a goalless draw with Italy.

The playing surface itself is a hybrid, natural turf reinforced with a small percentage of Desso synthetic fibre — the kind of pitch built to survive a fixture list rather than look pristine for one match.
