The roof over the main stands does not run all the way round, and that was the point. Stands A and B, east and west, rise in two tiers under cover; Stands C and D, north and south, stay single-tiered and open to the sky. The drawings came from three directions at once — a master plan from French specialists who had worked on the Stade de France, the architecture from an Australian practice, the interiors from the Shanghai Modern Design Institute — and the building work was shared between a Chinese contractor and the Vietnamese firm Xuân Mai.

It was put up quickly because it had to be ready for the 22nd Southeast Asian Games. The pitch was relaid in 2011–12. Before the Games returned in 2021, a repair programme worth 150 billion đồng replaced the grass and worked on the running track. A further facelift followed to meet AFC standards. The drainage is being rebuilt again now, with Zeon Zoysia grass going down in place of the old surface.

In September 2014, the final of the AFF U-19 Championship between Vietnam and Japan drew a crowd put at around 50,000 — some thousands above what the seats allow. Mỹ Đình hosts selected matches of the men's and women's national sides, and, since 2024, The Cong–Viettel.
