National Stadium Ramat Gan
The ground at Abba Hillel Silver Road was The National Stadium from 1954 until 2014, the fixed address of the Israel national team. The name came back to Ramat Gan Stadium in 2014, once the national side had moved on. No sponsor has ever been attached to it.
Its biggest crowds belong to the 1950s. Sixty thousand came in on 31 July 1956 for the Olympic qualifier against the USSR, who won 2–1. Demolition and a 55,000-seat replacement have been discussed and not built.
The 1964 AFC Asian Cup was played here, Israel taking the title after beating South Korea 2–1. For decades the State Cup final came to Ramat Gan too — Hapoel Tel Aviv against Hapoel Ramat Gan in 1961, and the six-goal 1987 final that Maccabi Tel Aviv held their nerve to win on penalties. Later the ground took UEFA Champions League nights: Maccabi Tel Aviv against Ajax and Bayern Munich in 2004–05, Maccabi Haifa against Bayern and Juventus in 2009–10.
The Israel Football Association owns the stadium; the land is managed by the Ramat Gan Municipality.
