Hapoel Ramat Gan

Match report

Hapoel Ramat-Gan and Hapoel Katmon Jerusalem played out a 2:2 draw in the Toto Cup Ligat Al regular season on Wednesday evening. The hosts took a 1:0 lead before the break, only for Jerusalem to respond and force a late finish. M. Diab opened the scoring for Ramat-Gan in the 11th minute, while O. Ovadia equalised just before half-time.

Ramat-Gan controlled the first period of play well enough to hold their advantage, but the away side grew into the game. E. Mensah picked up a yellow card in the 59th minute before being replaced by I. Dappa sixty minutes in. Jerusalem soon took the lead through a goal in the 87th minute, turning what looked like a comfortable home win into a tense final quarter.

And here's the thing: the visitors dominated possession and territorial play without being able to close the game out. Jerusalem had 56 per cent of the ball and 109 attacks compared to Ramat-Gan's 44 and 74, yet the hosts fought back in the dying moments. A. Tzur struck in stoppage time to salvage a point for the away side, and the stadium fell silent as the final whistle approached.

The statistics tell you what happened, but not why it mattered. Ramat-Gan had four shots on target and five off, while Jerusalem matched them with five on and five off. Both sides missed their chances in number, and the result reflected a match where three or four moments decided everything rather than sustained pressure.

Ramat-Gan arrive at this fixture on a three-game winning run, having beaten Maccabi Netanya 3:2 on Sunday and Petaḥ Tikva 2:1 in the previous round. Jerusalem come from a mixed week, with a 1:0 victory over Maccabi Petah Tikva on Sunday balancing losses to Netanya and Lublin earlier in August.
