Richards Bay Stadium
By September 2021 the roof was leaking, the wiring had deteriorated, the toilets no longer worked, and there was no fire equipment on site — reasons serious enough that the uMhlathuze municipality shut the venue down rather than patch it up. The closure lasted two years.
The rebuild that followed was substantial: roof waterproofing, new dressing rooms, CCTV and fire-alarm systems, a replanted pitch, upgraded floodlights. The municipality put roughly 200 million rand behind the project in 2022, and the new stand built in the process pushed capacity from around 4,000 seats to 10,500. The venue reopened on 24 July 2025.
The comeback was not entirely clean. Within weeks, in August 2025, the Premier Soccer League suspended the ground again, this time over the condition of the playing surface. Richards Bay F.C. had to wait until September for the pitch to meet league standards before returning home.
The stadium played no part in the 2010 World Cup, and its grass pitch has never carried a sponsor's name.
