No fixture raises the temperature along the KwaZulu-Natal coast quite like Richards Bay's meetings with AmaZulu and Durban City. The province has a name for it, the KZN derby, and turns out for it regardless of where either side sits in the table.

The club itself carries no long story behind that rivalry. It came into being in 2017, when a new owner bought the franchise from Thanda Royal Zulu and renamed it for the town on the coast rather than build something from nothing.

The nickname that followed, the Natal Rich Boys, plays on the town's name more than any fortune behind it, and the team turns out in blue and white at Richards Bay Stadium, a ground that holds 10,500.

Only one trophy sits in the cabinet so far: the National First Division title in 2021/22, which sent Richards Bay up into the Premier Soccer League. The Nedbank Cup, MTN8 and Carling Knockout have all gone untouched. What promotion did was put them in the same division as AmaZulu, turning a coastal rivalry that had run on geography alone into one that finally had results to argue over.
