«The Citizens»
The club moved down to Durban, took up residence at Chatsworth Stadium, and rebranded as Durban City FC, adopting sky blue and yellow and the nickname "The Citizens".
The gamble paid off within a year. Durban City won the Motsepe Foundation Championship in 2024/25, earning promotion straight back to the top flight it had just left as Maritzburg. Then, in its first season under the new name, it beat TS Galaxy 2-1 in the final to lift the Nedbank Cup — a trophy the club can point to as its own, won by the identity it created rather than inherited. That same debut season brought a seventh-place league finish and a Carling Knockout run that ended in the quarter-finals, a 3-1 extra-time defeat to Richards Bay.
Richards Bay, the club that ended its cup run, has since become another name fans watch for on the fixture list.
