Premier Soccer League (South Africa) 2026/27

The Premier Soccer League stands as the top-flight professional football competition in South Africa. It emerged in 1996 through an agreement that merged the National Soccer League and the remnants of the National Professional Soccer League. This structure unified the previously segregated football systems following the end of apartheid.

Unlike many international rivals, the league operates without championship play-offs. The season follows a double round-robin format where each team plays every other club twice. The side accumulating the most points at the conclusion of the campaign is crowned champion. The competition manages two professional divisions: the DStv Premiership and the National First Division.

The Premier Soccer League differs significantly from its domestic counterpart, the National First Division, due to a stark financial and infrastructural gap. It also maintains a distinct identity compared to other African leagues through its specific post-apartheid unification history and a unique three-team mini-league playoff system for relegation survival. The 16th-placed team in the Premiership faces automatic relegation, while the National First Division champion secures an immediate promotion spot. A third place is determined by a round-robin contest involving the Premiership’s 15th-placed team and the second and third-placed clubs from the second tier.

Mamelodi Sundowns hold the record for the most titles, having won 15 championships since the league's inception. This includes a streak of eight consecutive victories spanning from the 2017/18 season through 2024/25. The competition is characterized by the dominance of the "Big Three," which includes Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates. These entities have secured the vast majority of titles and possess substantially larger resources than their peers.

The current season features 16 clubs, including Amazulu, Chippa United, Durban City, Golden Arrows, Kaizer Chiefs, Kruger United, and others. Notable sponsors associated with the league have included Castle Lager, ABSA, DStv, and Betway. The competition remains deeply tied to the national transition from apartheid, with historic clubs like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates rising from the National Professional Soccer League to become national powerhouses upon unification.
