About

The National First Division sits directly beneath the Premier Soccer League as the second tier of South African professional football. Organised by the PSL, the competition was established in 1996 to replace the racially segregated National Soccer League Second Division and the OK League. While the top flight operates with significantly higher broadcasting revenue, the NFD maintains distinct regulations that separate it from the Premiership.

The structure involves 16 teams playing a double round-robin format, resulting in 30 matches per club. The champion secures automatic promotion to the top flight, while the second and third-placed teams enter a playoff against the fifteenth-placed Premiership side for the second promotion spot. The two lowest-ranked clubs face relegation to the ABC Motsepe League, the third tier. This pathway provides a clear route for ambition within the lower echelons of the sport.

Distinctive rules govern squad composition within this division. Clubs must adhere to a strict limit of three foreign players. Additionally, a mandatory quota requires five South African-born players under the age of 23 to feature in each match. These constraints aim to develop local talent more aggressively than the policies implemented in the upper division.

Historical anomalies have also shaped the narrative of the competition. Controversial "status purchases" have allowed clubs such as TTM and Royal AM to acquire top-flight licenses rather than earning promotion through on-pitch performance during the playoffs. This practice has occasionally disrupted the sporting meritocracy of the league.

The current season features clubs including Cape Town City, Casric Stars, Gomora United FC, Highbury, Hope FC, and Hungry Lions. Kruger United F.C. holds the title from the previous campaign, having secured their first championship in 2025–26. Previous winners like Durban City and Magesi highlight the competitive nature of the division, where historical giants like Jomo Cosmos and Free State Stars share the record for most titles with two each.

The competition serves as a critical feeder system for the national game, balancing developmental mandates with the higher stakes of promotion battles.
